Video tapes are not as fragile as you may think. In our 10 years of experience converting thousands of video tapes, camcorder tapes, and other old analogue media to digital (usually to a DVD), most tapes are in excellent condition. The sound and video are usually in good condition, providing you store them correctly.
The biggest mistake you can make storing your video tapes is to allow moisture to develop. Never leave your video tapes and camcorder tapes in an outside building. Garages, sheds, and outbuildings must never be used. The warm centrally heated houses have a lower humidity than outside buildings, and help to prevent moisture accumulating on your video tapes. The problem with moisture is tape mould. This is a highly infectious fungus which spreads its spores all over your precious tape.
Attics should also be avoided. They are usually unheated and suffer a similar humidity as outbuildings. The same goes for any area of the house where high humidity causes mould to appear on your walls. Damp areas of the home, including cold walls that do not get a lot of ventilation, are not safe areas to store your video tapes.
Always use the cardboard dust jackets to keep your tape safe. Label them to ensure you do not accidentally dispose of something important.
It is also essential that you keep your video and camcorder tapes away from anything with a magnet. The tapes are magnetic film. The small magnetic particles can be moved by magnets, damaging or even erasing part of your tape. If the magnet is especially powerful then sadly all of the tape could potentially be erased. Magnets can be found in hifi speakers so be careful as many speakers can be next to TV sets where it may be tempting to place your video and camcorder tapes onto.
